A Guide to Dishwasher Troubleshooting

Are your dishes not coming out as clean as they did when your dishwasher was new? Do you notice your dishwasher making strange noises during its cycle? Is your unit failing to turn on at all? Whatever the problem may be, the following information can help you accurately diagnose the issue with your dishwasher and search for a suitable fix before calling an appliance repair professional.

Why doesn’t my dishwasher drain?

After a washing cycle, your dishwasher may normally have a small pool of clean water inside the tub. If there is an excessive amount of water, however, there may be a problem with your unit’s drain pump, drain hose, or your home’s drain lines. If you see dirty water coming from the air gap, check for a kink or a clog in the drain line by removing the cover and using a stiff wire to clear it out. When your dishwasher is cool, turn off the power and remove the strainer from the spray arm (if it has one). Scrub it clean and put it back. If it still does not drain properly, you likely have a problem with your sink trap or the drain valve may need to be replaced.

Why won’t my dishwasher fill?

If your dishwasher is using too little water or is not filling at all, it may have an issue with the water supply system or it is draining water too quickly. Check to ensure the water supply is turned on by making sure the supply valve under the sink is turned all the way counterclockwise. Next, when your unit is cool, check the float mechanism inside the dishwasher and clean around the tube to ensure it is able to move freely. Finally, turn off the hot water valve and take a look at the water inlet valve located behind the dishwasher’s bottom front panel. Take it apart and clear any debris that may be caught in the inner screen. If your unit still will not fill, it is best to call a professional.

Why won’t my dishwasher turn on?

If your dishwasher does nothing when you press the power button, the door is closed, and the control is engaged, it may not be receiving electricity. Check the power outlet your unit is plugged into and press the “reset” button if it has one. If this does not work, check the electrical panel that serves your dishwasher for a tripped breaker or blown fuse. If you have verified that electrical power is available to the unit but it still doesn’t turn on, it is likely you have a problem with your unit’s door switch, timer, or selector switch.

Why does my dishwasher make noise?

A noisy dishwasher can be caused by a myriad of things, but it is most often the result of a defective pump, a worn or loose bearing ring or arm seal, or a wobbly spray arm. Bearing rings and arm seals are inexpensive and can be replaced easily, whereas replacing worn spray arms and pumps can be more costly repairs.
